Easter is quickly approaching and I’ve decided to do an egg hunt for the kids this year. In recent years, we have given our children one small gift as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. I want to keep with that tradition, but I’d like to add the fun of having an egg hunt. But I don’t want candy or little cheap plastic things to invade our house . 🙂
I’ve come up with some ideas to fill my children’s eggs and I thought maybe this would help other families who would like to frugally fill their Easter eggs too. When you begin filling a basket or eggs it can quickly add up!
All of these ideas are meant to be split up into separate eggs. So at the end of the hunt, your child will have a complete set of the item you have chosen. For example, if you want to give a child a set of crayons you would divide them evenly into the eggs.
10 Cheap Ways to Fill Easter Eggs for Children
1. Finger Puppets - I ordered this set for a little one in my house. There are some really cute animal sets as well. I would recommend checking the estimated shipping date if you are working within a short time frame because sometimes these lower cost items take a bit longer to arrive.
2. Homemade Playdough - You can find 50 homemade playdough recipes over at Free Homeschool Deals! If your eggs have holes in them, I would think the playdough may dry out so be careful.
3. Puzzles
4. Craft/Art Supplies - There are so many different ways you could go with this idea! Here are a few things off the top of my head:
- Beads and string to make bracelets
- Sidewalk chalk
- Googly eyes
- Sequin
- Pom poms
- Rubber stamps
- Stickers
5. Magnet Set - Alphabet or number magnets would be a great learning gift.
6. Coins - Place coins in your children’s Easter eggs. You could also choose to put enough to purchase a small treat like an ice cream cone, slurpee, or trip the dollar store to pick out something of their own choice.
7. Small Games - There are a variety of small games that have pieces which could be split up between eggs. You could even bust out some old school action with jacks or marbles.
8. Felt Play Set - When I thought of this idea, this felt cupcake busy bag from Money Saving Mom came to mind. I made this set a few years ago and my children love this activity! Any small felt play set would work.
9. LEGO Set
10. Make Your Own Toys - Okay, so this one doesn’t fill the egg, but I still think a great idea would be to turn the plastic eggs into toys themselves. There are ideas on the internet for making teacups, wobble toys, play food, and more!
And as an extra bonus, how about some free printable Easter coupons?! Our children have always enjoyed receiving special coupons that they can “redeem” with us.
The jelly bean clip art came from MyCuteGraphics.com. There are a total of 16 free printable Easter coupons in the set, 12 with the activities already chosen and 4 blank coupons to add an activity of your choice. Each coupon is approximately 4 in. x 2 1/2 in. The activities include:
- Stay up 20 minutes past bedtime
- Get out of one chore
- Play at the park of your choice
- Play a game of your choice
- One hour of alone with a parent
- Stay in pajamas all day
- One extra book at bedtime
- Bake a treat of your choice with Mom
- One breakfast in bed
- Add one item to grocery list
- Pick your choice for dinner
- Invite a friend over to play
The majority of the activities are simple and don’t cost a thing. And I know my kiddos will love these! You can download the free printable Easter coupons here or just click the picture above.
So what are you doing for Easter this year? We’ll enjoy the morning at church and then come home to enjoy each other and continue to celebrate what the Lord has done for us!

Thank you! I love the idea of non-candy treats.
So glad you liked the ideas, Victoria!
My daughter had allergies so no jelly beans for her so i made a tradition in their Easter baskets….a kite…sidewalk chalk…and bubbles. All of my kids looked forward to what kind they would get each year and never grew tired of the same thing…they looked forward to it
That sounds like a great tradition! I know my children would enjoy a basket with those goodies. 🙂 Thanks for sharing, Judy!
